How I Help with Computer Forensics

1Identify data sources and types to be collected: email, social, mobile, file shares, cloud, external hard drives, etc.

2Determine the technology and tools needed to solve the forensics puzzle.

3Work with custodians and technologists to get around encryption.

4Submit forensic recommendation to client.

An Example of My Work

A federal agency provided media that had encrypted data; no one from the government was able to retrieve the data.

We worked backwards by first figuring out the file type contained on the disks. Then, we wrote a custom program to retrieve the data, which revealed thousands of files.

Trends I'm Watching

More and more data is moving to the cloud. The more data that goes to the cloud, the more difficult it is to investigate.

Before we actually go to collect data, we research, investigate tools and run sample tests to make sure things are going to work. Sometimes during an investigation, we work with the original technology vendors to get information about their new tools or devices.

What Motivates Me

What Motivates Me

  • Resolving encryption, passwords, PINs and fingerprint protection on devices to complete an investigation in a defensible way and preserve metadata
  • Helping clients understand what forensic results can get them and the types of results to expect
  • Choosing the right technology and tools to solve each investigation
